The old man went across the river Sunday morning and spent the day, returning home last night in an intoxicated condition, and his death was probably the result of alcoholic poisoning. He was a candy vendor on the streets of Laredo. Justice Idar, acting in the capacity of coroner, was summoned to conduct an inquest on the body, and after making a thorough examination and finding no evidence of foul play, rendered a verdict of death from natural causes. SKELETON
UNEARTHED SKELETON: Human Bones Were Furnishing Phosphorus to Onion Roots.
At a slight depth below the surface upon his onion farm, the men digging an irrigation ditch for W. A. Cone encountered the ghastly find of a human skeleton one day last week. The trench was cut at right angles to the grave, or shallow cut in which the corpse had been deposited , and the latter was therefore cut in two.
All evidence indicates that it was buried hurriedly and without a coffin or box. Only the bones remained, apparently having been there a score or more years. In fact it was conjectured that the bones are those of some victim of the Indians of early days.
Mr. Cone took the skull in his house to keep as a curiosity. (LDT, 26 Aug 1907, p. 3, col. 3)

GUERRERO, PEDRO
OLD MAN FOUND DEAD: Apparently Dropped Dead Several Days Before Body was Discovered on Farm Near Cemetery.
Pedro Guerrero, an old man aged 79 years, who had charge of the farm of Inez Garcia Ramon, which is located north of the city cemetery, was found dead near the barn there Monday by a man who happened to be passing the place at the time and detected a nause which led to the discovery of the dead body.
At the time he met his death the old man was apparently in the act of hitching his burros to the water cart for the purpose of going after water, as part of the harness was already on the burros.
The man evidently met his death several days before the body was found, as it was in a bad state of decomposition. There was a large tear or gash in the side of the neck, which at first gave a suspicion of foul play, but after a thorough investigation was made, Justice Idar, who was summoned to the scene, dispelled the idea of foul play. A search of the premises also failed to substantiate this theory, at every implement stick, etc., on the premises was examined but without effect. Consequently Justice Idar rendered a verdict that death was due to natural causes, apparently from the bursting of an artery, as the tear in the neck could result from this. The old man lived on the farm by himself and was last seen several days ago.
He leaves three sons and a daughter in this city and one son at Pearsall. The body was interred in the cemetery near where the body was found. (LWT, 25 Jun 1911, p. 5, col. 1)

MENDIOLA, OFILIA
HEART FAILURE CAUSE: Of Sudden Death of Miss Ofilia Mendiola, A Popular Young School Girl.
So sudden was the death of Miss Ofilia Mendiola, that for hours after her demise the parents and friends of the young lady failed to realize that she is now only with them in body and that her spirit has flown. So sudden was the death that it was expected by no one, not even the young lady herself, who passed from life without the sight of a struggle while still asleep her features calm and peaceful, more sudden even than the sinking of a pebble in the water, for the pebble will leave the water corrugated with ripples, but not a line of pain was evident on the features of the deceased. With her mothers arms around her she passed away, unconscious in sleep, the spirit stepped from the body as does the butterfly from the cocoon, and left the body in the arms of the grief stricken mother.
Yesterday happy, free from care and apparently in a most healthful condition, Miss Mendiola went to church in commemoration of St. Joseth's [sic] day, later she played and walked around with her schoolmates and in the evening went to call on her aunt, Mrs. Henry Morton. Then for the first time she complained of feeling badly. She complained of a pain in the chest and a tickling sensation in her left arm. Mrs. Morton advised her to go home and lie down. Feeling better by night she arose and went walking with a little cousin around Martin Plaza and retired at an early hour apparently in no serious pain.
About five thirty in the morning the girl cousin who was sleeping with Miss Mendiola was awakened by the heavy breathing of the deceased and she spoke, but receiving no answer arose and called Mrs. Mendiola, the mother came and raising the child in her arms held her while she breathed her last, never dreaming that her child was dying.
Miss Mendiola was seventeen years of age and a very popular young girl as she made friends with all. She is a descendant of one of the oldest families of Laredo and resided with her parents and young brother in the old Sanchez residence on Grant Street. She has never been sickly, but on the other hand in the best of health at all times and attending p[h]ysicians say that it is the most peculiar death of its kind they ever witnessed. She drifted away while asleep and never felt pain the least.
The deceased is survived by the immediate family, mother, father and little brother and she is a niece of Mayor Amador Sanchez. Besides these, her death is grieved by many other relatives and friends of this city.
The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock from the San Agustine Pro Cathedral and the burial will be made in the burial lot in the New Catholic Cemetery.
The Times offers its sincere sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives.

A particular circumstance in connection with it is that all three men who fell from the bridge were at the time working at very near the same spot and all of them struck the river bed on the same little island. RIO, JUANITA DEL
Tragedy at Vergara Ranch: Jesus Vergara Accidentally Shot and Killed his Sister-in-law this Morning.
A deplorable tragedy that ended the life of a young lady occurred early this morning at the Vergara ranch near Palafox, when Jesus Vergara, son of the unfortunate man who recently fell the victim of Mexican federal soldiers, accidentally shot and killed his sister-in-law, Juanita Del Rio, aged about 16 years.
According to the information secured, it appears that Jesus Vergara had gone into the kitchen, where his sister-in- law and three United States cavalrymen were. Jesus and the young lady began to joke with each other and in a playful manner the man picked up a rifle which, he claims, he thought was empty. During a friendly scuffle, Jesus is said to have remarked, "I am going to shoot you." The young woman replied, "Go ahead," whereupon he pulled the trigger and the weapon was discharged, the bullet striking the girl in the abdomen. She succumbed fifteen minutes later.
Vergara was grief-stricken over the tragedy, saying that he thought that the weapon was unloaded when he playfully pointed it at his sister-in-law. Justice Kippeadroch and Constable Petty from Minera reached the scene of the tragedy this afternoon and are now making an investigation. (LT, 29 Mar 1914, p. 8, col. 6)

RODRIGUEZ, FRANCISCO
STABBED TO DEATH: A Fatal Recounter Between Two Mexicans in Nuevo Laredo Last Night.
This morning, news reached The Times office that two men had been killed in New Laredo last night, and a commissioner of the paper was immediately detailed to proceed thither and ascertain the facts in the case. When the said commissioner reached the other side, he was afforded ocular demonstration of the fact that the people of our sister city were laboring under some excitement, as a great crowd was gathered in front of the office of the Presidencia Municipal. The reporter was soon one of the number, and was there for the purpose of discovering what he could of interest to the public. The crowd was composed of men, women and children of all ages and sizes, and the morbid curiosity they exhibited to get a sight of a murdered man, covered with his own blood and wearing the clothes he died in, was a sight that could but excite the disgust of anyone who does not appreciate the fact that a sight of anything at all unusual, no matter what its character, will craw a crowd together in any country. Nothing could be seen here save the swaying to and fro of the crowd as they would press forward to get a sight of the body when any evidence was given that the authorities were about to bring it forth from the juzgado. Getting weary of this monotony, the reporter passed into the office of the judge of the third district, and notified him of the object of his visit. The judge was very courteous, and kindly escorted the newspaper man to view the bodies of the dead and wounded, and furnished him with the following facts:
It seems that Francisco Rodríguez, a youth of sixteen summers, whose [sic] was originally from Matamoros, and son of Vicente and Juana Rodríguez still of that place, thought to have a "good time" last night, and got on the out side of considerable mescal, which he must have thought one of the ingredients of a "good time." After "tanking up" pretty well, he proceeded to a house of prostitution kept and owned by one Dona Antonia Martinez. Here he met a young man by the name of Amado Hernandez. Hernandez joined Rodríguez in his attempt to have fun, and they were all having a "good time." This lasted until near 1 o'clock, when the two men became involved in a dispute over the respective charms of two of the girls present. The quarrel waxed warmer and warmer and words ran high, until they each simultaneously drew a fearful knife, that weapon so effectively used by Mexicans in personal recounters, and made a desperate lunge at each other. They kept it up for some time, and Hernandez had received several different wounds, and it began to look as though he would certainly be the victim. Recognizing this, he summoned all his strength for a final effort, and made another pass at Rodríguez, hitting him in the right breast just to the right of and below the nipple, and drove the knife to the hilt, and Rodríguez fell over a dead man. By this time the police had been notified and appeared upon the scene and arrested all the parties on the premises. They were taken to the calaboose, from which place the dead man was buried. Hernandez is still alive, but the fearful manner in which he is carved up will certainly result in his death. He is being attended by his female relations, and, by careful attention, may recover. TREVIñO, AGUSTINA
From Tuesday's Daily - PIONEER CITIZEN PASSES AWAY: Mrs. Agustina Treviño, born in Laredo Over 76 Years Ago, Died at Her Home Here Last Evening.
Last evening just after the shades of darkness had gathered and the loved ones who were at her bedside kept vigil over the patient, the Angel of Death beckoned and the summons were obeyed, and then the spirit of an old pioneer citizen left its citadel of earthly existence and silently went on its way to a realm where all is peace and repose. Last evening at 7:35, at her home on Iturbide Street, Mrs. Agustina Treviño de Treviño ceased to be of this world and joined the innumerable caravan on the eternal shore where loved ones had preceded her many years before.
Mrs. Treviño was one of the real pioneers of Laredo, where she was born 76 years ago on August 28, 1838. In her native city she spent her entire life, in the meantime witnessing the vicissitudes, the hardships and tribulations that were the lot of those who lived on the frontier in the trying days of long ago. Even a tabloid chronology of those days of a half century ago, or even three-quarters of a century back (for she was here then), would make a story that would brighten the pages of early Texas history.
Deceased was a kind, considerate and good Christian woman, beloved by those who knew her best, adored by those of her immediate household. In 1850 in the city, the subject of this sketch was married to Tomas Treviño, who died in 1869. To this union came five children; two daughters and three sons, of whom two sons, Tomas and Santos Treviño survive.
Mrs. Treviño, despite her advanced age was in apparently good health up to about ten weeks ago, when she became ill and took to her bed. Gradually she became weaker and in the last days of her illness the loved ones watching over the patient sufferer realized that the end was near and last evening, like a little child passing into slumber, she peacefully closed her eyes and departed from this vale of tears.
To the grief-stricken family goes the sincere sympathy of many friends in their hours of sorrow. The funeral will take place from the family home, 908 Iturbide Street, to San Agustin pro-cathedral, tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock, with interment in the Catholic Cemetery.

VELA, MANUEL BENAVIDES
FROM AGUILARES: This morning our little city was saddened by the arrival of a post haste message to Santos P. Ortiz to send a doctor on special train that his father-in-law, Sr. Manuel Benavides Vela, was seriously ill. The courier told your correspondent that Mr. Vela, who is an elderly gentleman, was roping some cattle on horseback, one of his delights, when the animal fell jerking horse and rider down, but not real seriousness was attached to the fall until this morning when Mr. Vela took seriously ill. Then all possible was done to secure medical aid but in vain as Mr. Vela died as Mr. Vela died about 10 o'clock a.m. A special with Mr. S. Ortiz and medical aid was ready to leave Laredo about 4 o'clock p.m., when a second courier arrived with a message that Mr. Vela was dead and to bring a coffin. His son will take his remains to Laredo to be laid by the side of his dearly beloved daughter, Mrs. Santos Ortiz, whose death occurred but a short time since. Special has just passed to Los Angeles station where they will be met by the deceased and relatives. The bereaved have our heartfelt sympathy. Sad indeed: it is to have our dear ones snatched from us so suddenly. But God knows best and never makes a mistake. All left for us is to try to understand His infinite goodness and be resigned to His holy will.
